The pens work best on non-porous materials (Mugs, plates, bottles, phone cases, etc..). These materials allow the ink to sit on top of the surface, which produces the best 3D effect. Once the ink sets after 5-10 minutes, it becomes  permanent and totally waterproof! If you were to use them on non-porous surfaces, make sure to go over each stroke 3-4 times so the ink builds up and provides the best 3D effect.
